Microdosing is the latest buzzword in psychedelic circles. It’s the practice of consuming very low, sub-hallucinogenic doses of a psychedelic substance (usually one tenth of a therapeutic dose), such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or psilocybin-containing mushrooms. As Michael Pollan chronicles in his book How To Change Your Mind, the journey into microdosing is a complex and intriguing one.

“The biggest misconception people have about psychedelics is that these are drugs that make you crazy. We now have evidence that that does happen sometimes – but in many more cases, these are drugs that can make you sane.”

And he’s right.

Psychedelics promote neuroplasticity and make different parts of the brain more connected. In studies on LSD, participants’ brains were more interconnected upon taking a small dose of LSD.

While more than a thousand early studies linked psychedelic use with beneficial effects, there was a 40-year pause on psychedelic research due to a substance ban. Despite continued prohibition, growing research has revealed the promising potential of LSD and psilocybin for treating alcohol and tobacco dependence, depression, end-of-life anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Psychedelics have also been shown to increase openness and inspire mystical-type experiences.

In one large-scale study on microdosing psychedelics, the three most commonly reported benefits were improved mood, increased focus and enhanced creativity. By microdosing daily or weekly, many people find they derive more enjoyment and presence from their regular routine.

So, what is a typical micro-dose of magic mushrooms?

  • Microdose: 0.2-0.5 grams
  • Moderate dose: 2.5-4 grams
  • Hero dose: 5-7 grams (proceed with caution)

According to Dr. James Fadiman, author of The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide, an effective approach is to microdose every 4th day, while closely observing how you react the day after.

When microdosing, you can follow your normal routine and keep a journal of the various effects you experience. But just know, you probably won’t see rocks sparkling or luminescent rays hologramming out of your devices.
